Bone Carving

Participants will learn about our ancestors connection to bone tool making and the wide range of crafts that can be created from bone.

To begin, participants will look at a variety of bone tools and practical applications for this versatile material. The structure of bone, cleaning/preparation methods of bone prior to use, splitting techniques, selecting the right bone for the desired tool and how to use Flint/Abrasive stones to shape bone into effective tools will be taught.

The overall aim for the afternoon is for the participants to gain a basic understanding of working with bone and for them to apply this knowledge to create a bone tool of their choice. Working bone with primitive techniques i.e flint and abrasive stones is fairly time consuming so it is realistic that participants will be able to make a smaller tool such as a sewing needle in the time allocated. Those who may choose to create a harpoon for example are likely to not finish that tool during the day.
